The Spectacular Now – LFF Review

Hollywood’s version of ‘living in the moment’ differs greatly from the reality teenagers’ face. The Spectacular Now is a refreshingly authentic take on this: full of love, idealism, disillusions and exasperating uncertainty.

Ponsoldt successfully captures the college experience by delving into its warming, dizzying highs and staring into its empty, lonely lows.

He’s assisted greatly by Teller and Woodley’s outstanding performances which make the film. Woodley is so disarmingly charming – it’s clear why she’s heading to the top.

Simpler than and superior to Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Spectacular Now is a classic teen movie for the ages.

TL; DR: Through Ponsoldt’s simple direction and Woodley’s outstanding performance, The Spectacular Now delivers an American teen movie that actually resembles the reality of an American teen’s life.
